Why we sail – 7 good reasons why you should hoist the sails once in your life

Cast off! The sailing adventure begins. And it doesn’t have to be an Atlantic crossing. Sailing has become a real lifestyle. More and more people are buying used or new sailing boats. Day trips and weekend trips are organised on holiday and some people fall in love with their boat so much that they no longer want to go ashore. In this blog we tell you 7 reasons why you should try sailing once in your life.

#1 Freedom when sailing

Every sailor knows the feeling: you have left the harbour behind and the first sea breeze blows into the sails, pushing the boat forward. Effortlessly and without an engine, you move towards the horizon, driven only by the power of the wind. Further and further out, until the coast forms only a tiny line in the distance.

If you sail that far into the endless blue, you know what freedom is. On land, you are often steered in directions, have to take curves and end up in dead ends. On the sea, you are the architect of your own happiness. You have the choice, make your route the way you like it! Plan your happiness route with our AyeAye® App. Click to find out more!

#2 Deceleration - something we no longer know

What is calmness? And how long has it been since you found a place that truly slows you down?

When sailing, you too will find your magical resting place. A place where you drift, far away from the noise of people and the stress of everyday life. Just a gentle breeze that caresses your skin and small waves of water that clap gently against your keel. Meditating is no longer so difficult.

#3 Discovering while sailing

Sailing also means setting off into the unknown and discovering empty places. Places so remote that they are almost inaccessible by land.

With your sailboat, you are free and flexible to head for pretty much any bay (exceptions prove the rule) that your eyes catch sight of through binoculars. Drop anchor and enjoy a day in a deserted paradise – Robinso Crusoe style!

#4 Sailing - Being one with the forces of nature

Have you been resolving to spend more time in nature lately?

Sailing can help you do that! Wind and water are the elements that make sailing possible and you are right in the middle of it. You play with them, let them challenge you, even have to fight sometimes.

#5 Pirates, liveaboards and geeks: a lovable community

If you immerse yourself in the sailing community, you will experience a miracle, in a positive sense! You feel the freedom of bygone pirate days revived, you sail wherever you want and find treasures that only the sea can offer you.

You get to know people who live on their boats and who have this very special sparkle in their eyes.

And no one is left alone with their problems. Support is always there, especially when it comes to individual technical uncertainties. The sailing community and its tech-savvy members are always there to help you in forums, ports and on the high seas. Real sailor comradeship!

#6 Sailing? Not that expensive!

If you think you have to pay a lot for a sailing experience, you’re wrong. Day trips and introductory sailing trips cost between 50 and 75 € on the German North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts.

With four hours under sail, you get a first insight into the world of sailing as a beginner. After that, you can always decide whether to swap your condo for a sailing boat.

#7 One last good reason to sail: it can change your life.

It’s not at all uncommon, especially in these times, for people to rethink their life situation. Alternative lifestyles and holidays are becoming more important. Calls for freedom, originality and independence are getting louder.

A day trip on a sailing boat can give impulses, inspire and fascinate. What you make of it is up to you.

Conclusio maritimo

Ultimately, you decide for yourself what is a good reason to go sailing. We can only speak of our own experiences and our own love of sailing. But if we have inspired just one person to experience a day trip on a sailboat, then this blog has been absolutely worth it!
